张霜报告:Topological Weyl metamaterials

报告摘要:

Metamaterials have attracted tremendous attention due to their exotic optical properties and functionalities that are not attainable from naturally occurring materials. In particular, metamaterials can be designed to exhibit nontrivial topological features. In this talk, I will start with an introduction of the concepts of Berry curvature and topological invariant. I will show that combination of chirality and hyperbolicity – an extreme form of anisotropy, can result in nontrivial topological orders in metamaterials and consequently topologically protected photonic surface states that are immune from scattering by defects and sharp edges. I will finally show the experimental observation of photonic ‘Fermi arcs’ in the microwave regime.
报告人简介:

张霜,英国伯明翰大学物理与天文系教授。2005年美国新墨西哥大学电子工程系博士毕业。先后于2005-2006年在伊利诺伊大学香槟分校,2006-2010年在加州大学伯克利分校从事博士后工作。2010年加入英国伯明翰大学,任Reader;2013年晋升教授。研究兴趣包括:纳米光子学,超材料与表面等离子激元,非线性光学等。在Nature及其子刊,Physical Review Letters等期刊上发表多篇论文,引用1万余次。曾获Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Research Award (2016),ERC Consolidator Grant (2015),IUPAP (International Union of Pure and Applied Physics) Young Scientist Award in Optics (2010)等奖项,并于2016年当选为美国光学学会会士(Fellow of OSA),是Light: Science & Application等期刊编委。
